About The Book

I wrote this book for me… to get some exciting stories out of my head that have been bouncing around for years. So, thanks to my family, the patience of my wife Dianne, and the computer competence of my son, Edward Bryont Loyst, and my daughter, Elizabeth Ashley Loyst, it finally got written.

A special thanks to friends, Linda Kellar and David Piggott for their patient proofreading of my early rough draft manuscript. They provided valuable comments, and I listened. My friend Paul Cowan for his tech genius gets a free copy.

I believe my book is a good read if you enjoy historical facts blended with adventure, family saga, subtle humor, and a few tense moments. I want to share my novel and I hope readers will enjoy the ups and downs of the many short stories that I have blended to shape the overall narrative leading to an exciting turn of events in the last few chapters. This book is fiction but based on some real-life experiences… When you finish reading my book, I would appreciate knowing whether you liked or disliked KENNEBEC CORNERS. Please comment, curse, or compliment and send a note to me at: edwardloyst@gmail.com.

Introduction

Introduction: The Beginning

This epic tale begins with two Welsh brothers, Jacob and William Thomas, who arrive in Boston at the beginning of the American Revolution. Conscripted into the British Navy, they are ordered to fight for the King of England. At the war’s end, being on the losing side, they were awarded land grants in Canada and designated as United Empire Loyalists by King George III.

The story follows their descendants from 1775 to 2025 as they navigate the challenges of a new world, shaping their legacy through hard work, tenacity, and enterprise. The Thomas clan’s journey includes dirt farming, road building, moonshine distilling, logging, teaching, and achieving small business success.

In the modern era, Clay Thomas emerges from a dysfunctional family in the 1950s. He clashes with his father, gets expelled from school, and leaves home early to find his path in the big city. We follow his athletic achievements and the development of his leadership skills through wilderness adventures.
